I went to see the opening night of this show last evening and as I sat down in the Sternberger Auditorium was ready to be blown away. The sets and lighting at the top of the show were amazing and inventive. However the show itself was anything but. A cast of apparently completely untrained singers attacked Mitch Leigh's beautiful score, and both the cast and the score lost. The worst singing of the evening was delivered by Allison-Murray Nikkel, who was either incredibly miscast, or has blown out her voice in rehearsals from misuse. Of course, her singing felt right at home in the pallidly acted evening. As handsome and winning as Jacob Martin might be, he can never rouse his cast to even the mediocre. They are left bludgeoning one of the best written musicals of the 1960's. However, be not dismayed, this show is so well written that not even the helpless orchestra, floundering without strings or even a synth, can destroy its inherent beauty. Acting=C- Singing=F Direction=F- Collapse
