This major solo exhibition of work by Leonardo Drew opened to rave reviews in Houston in Summer 2009. The Weatherspoon Art Museum is proud to be the exclusive presenting museum of “Existed: Leonardo Drew” in the Southeast. The exhibition includes 14 major works realized between 1991 and 2006, including the installation, “Number 123” (2006), which is specially adapted by the artist for the Weatherspoon’s Atrium gallery, along with eight works on paper made between 2005 and 2008. Throughout his career, Drew has been continuously engaged with the cyclical nature of existence. Made to resemble the detritus of everyday life, his formally abstract but emotionally charged compositions have an aesthetic authority and metaphorical weight that is as unique as it is symbolic. Often interpreted as a comment on the position of African-Americans in contemporary American society, his work transcends any specific historic and ethnic reference, and has a unique aesthetic authority that is deeply embedded in the theory and practice of mid-twentieth-century abstraction. Ranging from the intense drama of his sculptures and installations of the 1980s, to the epic sweep of his massive wall-bound tableaux in the 1990s, to the ethereal language of his paper casts of the early 2000s, his works transcend time and place in favor of a celebration of things eternal. The monograph published in conjunction with the exhibition is the first publication to fully document and interpret Drew’s career and his place within the broader context of contemporary art. At 208 pages, with more than 110-four color illustration plates, the publication includes essays by exhibition curator Claudia Schmuckli and Allen S. Weiss, Associate Adjunct Professor, Performance Studies and Cinema, New York University; an interview with the artist; an annotated chronology; and a selected biography and bibliography. The catalogue retails for $59.95 and is available in the Museum Shop. ”Existed: Leonardo Drew” is organized by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. Major funding has been provided in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the Eleanor and Frank Freed Foundation, the Harpo Foundation, the Linda Pace Foundation, The Fifth Floor Foundation, and Sikkema Jenkins & Co. Educational and public programs related to the exhibition at the Weatherspoon are made possible through a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council.

Directed by Brett Ingram, Assistant Professor, Department of Media Studies at UNCG, "Rocaterrania" is a feature length documentary that explores the secret world of scientific illustrator and visionary artist Renaldo Kuhler. Ingram will lead a discussion following the screening. In the last four decades, seventy-six-year-old Renaldo Kuhler has created hundreds of plates for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, illustrating diverse flora and fauna for obscure scientific journals and reference books. Before the making of this documentary, no one knew that Kuhler is also a prolific visionary artist. "Rocaterrania" unveils Kuhler's astounding body of work to the world and reveals the powerful story of his life in the process. Among other themes, the film is about the insidious nature of conformity, the courage to be one’s true self, and the redemptive power of artistic creation. Featuring an eclectic original score by Merge Records recording artists Shark Quest. "Rocaterrania" received an award for Best Original Music in a Documentary at the 2009 River Run Film Festival.

Art After Dark is a new hands-on program for adults aimed at inspiring creativity. Each workshop explores a different creative process and uses the “Existed: Leonardo Drew” exhibition as a departure point. Participate in one or all three workshops. No experience is necessary. For details and to reserve a space, email weatherspoon@uncg.edu or call 336.334.5770. This workshop explores how everyday actions are full of meaning and creative potential. Gestures that may appear to be routine, turn out to be distinctly personal and idiosyncratic. Leonardo Drew performs his own alchemy on the myriad objects that populate the world. Participants will investigate simple actions performed with mundane objects, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Bring 3 objects to the workshop: something flat, something long and something that contains. Lynn Book’s 25 year history of interdisciplinary artistic practice crosses boundaries between performance art, dance, theatre, visual art, language and new music forms. Her performance work has received citations, fellowships, and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, Franklin Furnace, and Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. She is currently Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance and Program Director for Creativity and Innovation at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Looking for ways to instill more creativity in your students? Educators are invited to a 30-minute preprogram discussion before each Art After Dark workshop. The “Just for Educators” program provides information on Leonardo Drew with strategies for translating workshop ideas for the classroom. For information and to receive professional development credit, contact Terri Dowell-Dennis by email at t_dowell@uncg.edu or 336.256.1449. Public Programming for "Existed: Leonardo Drew" is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Weatherspoon presents the U.S. premiere of Michael Ashkin's film, "Here" (2009), a psychologically intense rumination on the mental space wrought by life in the desert and the broader concepts of space and time conveyed by the word "here." Ashkin became well known in the 1990s for his miniature scale models that depict marginalized landscapes, such as mines, oil fields, and industrial wastelands. His works circulate around ideas of social, economic and political exclusion and abandonment, presenting us with desolate, yet clearly utilitarian, architectures and landscapes of unspecified location. "Here" consists of film footage of a single darkened room accompanied by an affecting voice-over that alludes to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Michael Ashkin (b. 1955, Morristown, NJ) received an M.A. in Middle East Languages and Cultures from Columbia University and an M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been shown in exhibitions around the globe, including Documenta 11 and the "1997 Whitney Biennial". His work is the subject of recent exhibitions at Secession, Vienna and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University. Ashkin is the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Art at Cornell University, College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. As the Spring 2010 Falk Visiting Artist at the Weatherspoon and the Art Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Ashkin will participate in MFA graduate student critiques and present a gallery talk and public lecture.

The human body is a source of endless artistic inspiration. Many artists have created fantastical or abject representations of the body, often symbolizing it through severed limbs or disembodied anatomical parts. Other artists experiment with media and form to tap into social and psychological issues connected to the body. "Odd Bodies" includes work from the Weatherspoon’s permanent collection by Janine Antoni, Rona Pondick, Hiram Williams, LoCurto/Outcault, Mika Rottenberg, and other artists who delve into imaginative and, sometimes, bizarre examinations of the relationship between body and mind.

Henri Matisse is considered one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. Known for his use of bright colors, flat patterns, abstract forms and graceful lines, Matisse developed a unique artistic vision that continues to inspire artists to this day. Drawn from the Museum's permanent collection, this exhibition will pair paintings and prints by modern and contemporary artists alongside prints by Matisse to illustrate the artist's enduring legacy, both in terms of style and subject matter.

The term “collage” derives from the French word, “coller,” meaning “to glue." The word was coined by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th century when the technique became a distinctive part of modern art. Since then numerous artists have utilized the technique in diverse ways to create unique works of art. The individual elements that comprise a collage and which can range from diverse images and text to a variety of materials, all join together to determine the work’s content or purpose. The Weatherspoon has an extensive collection of collages, many of which have not been on previous display.

Coiling is a flexible medium that allows cloth fabric to be used in exciting ways to create baskets, bowls, and other vessel shapes. It’s also a great use for that beloved fabric remnant in your closet! Fabric strips are wound around a paper or cotton coil and connected by use of a knotting technique. During the class each person will make a vessel approximately 8 x 5 inches in size (size will vary based on chosen design and cording size used). If possible participants should bring scissors to class; all other materials provided. No experience required. Lynn Pownell is a weaver who lives and works from her home studio in Glencoe Mill Village, Burlington, NC. She specializes in weaving fabric strips into rugs, coiled vessels and other household items using recycled textiles, textile mill ends and loom waste, a variety of yarns, and an occasional piece of new fabric in her work. Fee includes all materials except scissors.

For many, thread as a material calls to mind the notion of craft art or perhaps handicrafts such as embroidery or knitting. The work included in this exhibition will undoubtedly confound those expectations. Although the majority of pieces included in the exhibition feature some kind of thread element, many only evoke the material. And, rather than deriving from utilitarian purposes, all are non-functional. What these works have in common is that the artists behind them chose thread as a compositional element in order to create lines quite distinct from those possible in other media. As a result, these works surprise us with their innovation and offer us new ways of looking at art.

Friday, March 5 from 5:30-9pm(First Friday) Embodiment Artists Reception: Join Green Hill Center and exhibiting artists with music by alternative gypsy folk band Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands and baroque rock band Silver Hill Mine. Embodiment presents nine artists who investigate the body as a site of transformative identity and mediation. Many employ non-traditional materials and processes to merge the conceptual with the sensual. Through arresting multimedia installations, photographs, and sculptural works in clay, fiber and metal, visitors will be able to explore changing conceptions of the body, and how a sensorial experience informs a psychological state

The platinum-selling band’s recent fourth album, Until The Whole World Hears, continues to perform in the top of the sales charts since its Nov. 17 release. The album’s title track marks a ninth career No.1 radio single. The song currently tops multiple Christian radio formats, spending a sixth week at No. 1 on Billboard’s AC-Indicator radio chart and a second week at No. 1 on the AC-Monitored chart. In addition, Casting Crowns’ 2008 Christmas album, Peace On Earth (10/7/2008), was recently certified RIAA Gold, and continues to be one of the top-selling Christmas albums of the season. Despite an unprecedented six-year career with Casting Crowns, the seven band members remain active in student ministry in the Atlanta area and tour part-time around their local church duties. Serving his 18th year in youth ministry, Hall is the student pastor at Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church in Atlanta. As a remarkable occasion, Casting Crowns performed for a second time in North Korea in April 2009, in partnership with Global Resource Services, as the band continues to forge invaluable relationships with the people in the D.P.R.K. About Tenth Avenue North: Named GMA Dove Awards New Artist of the Year (2009), Tenth Avenue North was the best-selling and most played new Christian artist of 2008, scoring three No. 1s at radio and crossing the 100,000 sales mark with its debut Over and Underneath (5/20/08) in just seven months. The band – Mike Donehey (lead vocals/acoustic guitar), Jason Jamison (drummer) and Jeff Owen (electric guitar/background vocals) – has toured extensively over the last year in support of Over and Underneath (recently crossing the 200,000 mark in total album sales),and recently wrapped an impressive run of shows on its very first headlining tour- “Inside and In Between”. Tenth Avenue North is one of the few debut bands that have experienced enough momentum to headline its own tour with only one album under its belt. For up-to-date information on Tenth Avenue North please visit www.tenthavenuenorth.com or www.providentpress.com.

Full of heart and a terrific new Broadway score, this Tony Award® winning Best Musical is "one of the funniest shows you're ever likely to see," praised Entertainment Weekly.
