This major solo exhibition of work by Leonardo Drew opened to rave reviews in Houston in Summer 2009. The Weatherspoon Art Museum is proud to be the exclusive presenting museum of “Existed: Leonardo Drew” in the Southeast. The exhibition includes 14 major works realized between 1991 and 2006, including the installation, “Number 123” (2006), which is specially adapted by the artist for the Weatherspoon’s Atrium gallery, along with eight works on paper made between 2005 and 2008. Throughout his career, Drew has been continuously engaged with the cyclical nature of existence. Made to resemble the detritus of everyday life, his formally abstract but emotionally charged compositions have an aesthetic authority and metaphorical weight that is as unique as it is symbolic. Often interpreted as a comment on the position of African-Americans in contemporary American society, his work transcends any specific historic and ethnic reference, and has a unique aesthetic authority that is deeply embedded in the theory and practice of mid-twentieth-century abstraction. Ranging from the intense drama of his sculptures and installations of the 1980s, to the epic sweep of his massive wall-bound tableaux in the 1990s, to the ethereal language of his paper casts of the early 2000s, his works transcend time and place in favor of a celebration of things eternal. The monograph published in conjunction with the exhibition is the first publication to fully document and interpret Drew’s career and his place within the broader context of contemporary art. At 208 pages, with more than 110-four color illustration plates, the publication includes essays by exhibition curator Claudia Schmuckli and Allen S. Weiss, Associate Adjunct Professor, Performance Studies and Cinema, New York University; an interview with the artist; an annotated chronology; and a selected biography and bibliography. The catalogue retails for $59.95 and is available in the Museum Shop. ”Existed: Leonardo Drew” is organized by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. Major funding has been provided in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the Eleanor and Frank Freed Foundation, the Harpo Foundation, the Linda Pace Foundation, The Fifth Floor Foundation, and Sikkema Jenkins & Co. The Greensboro Children's Museum will host its 2nd Annual 5K Family Fun Run/Race called The Running of the Green on Saturday, May 22 at 8am. This event will kickoff the grand opening of the Museum's new Edible Schoolyard that morning. The official timed race will start and end at The Greensboro Children’s Museum located at 220 North Church Street and will follow a scenic route through downtown and historic Fisher Park. In addition to the Run Run, there will also be a special Kids Dash race. Online registration will be opening soon www.gcmuseum.com or on www.active.com. Run/Walk participants are encouraged to form a team with friends or make it a family event and help raise funds for the Museum. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers and to teams who raise the most money! Proceeds go to support operations and educational programmings at The Greensboro Children’s Museum.

People all over the world have marked the skin permanently with dark pigments for thousands of years. In this exhibit, student curators explore why ancient mummies, members of traditional societies, and Wake Forest students are tattooed and with what designs. The traditional implements, historic illustrations, and contemporary photographs on display will excite tattoo aficionados and those just curious about a widespread custom. Admission is free.

This new permanent exhibit, featuring stunning objects from MOA’s significant African collection, explores various themes in African religion and how practices have evolved over time. Admission is free.

The Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its grand opening celebration for its new Edible Schoolyard on Saturday, May 22nd. The Museum has been selected to be the first museum in the country to be affiliated with Alice Waters (the renowned food activist and chef) and The Chez Panisse Foundation and will have the first Edible Schoolyard at a Museum. The Museum’s Edible Schoolyard will be comprised of hands-on, teaching gardens and kitchen classrooms where children will learn about the relationship between food, nature and life through planting, tending, growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking organic foods simply and nutritiously and will enjoy a “Seed to Table” experience. The project will include a half acre garden outside the Museum filled organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, trees and shrubs, with winding natural walkways and seating areas, include indoor and outdoor classrooms, a chicken coop, ramadas and arbors, a green house, a children’s tool shed, composting and recycling stations and a teaching kitchen, where children and families can create recipes, cook food, set tables, and share meals and conversation in a classroom setting. The Edible Schoolyard at GCM is expected to serve as a national model for other museums and children’s institutions nationwide promoting health and wellness in young children and families. To kickoff the celebration, the Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its 2nd annual Running of the Green 5K Family Fun Run & Walk that will start and end at the Museum. Art After Dark is a new hands-on program for adults aimed at inspiring creativity. Each workshop explores a different creative process and uses the “Existed: Leonardo Drew” exhibition as a departure point. Participate in one or all three workshops. No experience is necessary. Gestures that may appear to be routine, turn out to be distinctly personal and idiosyncratic. Leonardo Drew performs his own alchemy on the myriad objects that populate the world. Participants will investigate simple actions performed with mundane objects, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Bring 3 objects to the workshop: something flat, something long and something that contains. Lynn Book’s 25 year history of interdisciplinary artistic practice crosses boundaries between performance art, dance, theatre, visual art, language and new music forms. Her performance work has received citations, fellowships, and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, Franklin Furnace, and Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. She is currently Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance and Program Director for Creativity and Innovation at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Looking for ways to instill more creativity in your students? Educators are invited to a 30-minute preprogram discussion before each Art After Dark workshop. The Weatherspoon presents the U.S. premiere of Michael Ashkin's film, "Here" (2009), a psychologically intense rumination on the mental space wrought by life in the desert and the broader concepts of space and time conveyed by the word "here." Ashkin became well known in the 1990s for his miniature scale models that depict marginalized landscapes, such as mines, oil fields, and industrial wastelands. His works circulate around ideas of social, economic and political exclusion and abandonment, presenting us with desolate, yet clearly utilitarian, architectures and landscapes of unspecified location. "Here" consists of film footage of a single darkened room accompanied by an affecting voice-over that alludes to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Michael Ashkin (b. 1955, Morristown, NJ) received an M.A. in Middle East Languages and Cultures from Columbia University and an M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been shown in exhibitions around the globe, including Documenta 11 and the "1997 Whitney Biennial". His work is the subject of recent exhibitions at Secession, Vienna and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University. Ashkin is the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Art at Cornell University, College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. As the Spring 2010 Falk Visiting Artist at the Weatherspoon and the Art Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Ashkin will participate in MFA graduate student critiques and present a gallery talk and public lecture.

The human body is a source of endless artistic inspiration. Many artists have created fantastical or abject representations of the body, often symbolizing it through severed limbs or disembodied anatomical parts. Other artists experiment with media and form to tap into social and psychological issues connected to the body. "Odd Bodies" includes work from the Weatherspoon’s permanent collection by Janine Antoni, Rona Pondick, Hiram Williams, LoCurto/Outcault, Mika Rottenberg, and other artists who delve into imaginative and, sometimes, bizarre examinations of the relationship between body and mind.

The OmniSphere Theater at the Natural Science Center of Greensboro presents Bugs 3-D - A Rainforest Adventure! In Bugs, experience a bug's eye-view of the world of insects! Highlighting the extraordinary lives of insects, Bugs focuses on the life cycles of a praying mantis and a butterfly from their birth to their fateful encounter in the tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia. Check out more than 40 bugs magnified up to 250,000 times their normal size. Note - This show may be too intense for the younger visitors.

The term “collage” derives from the French word, “coller,” meaning “to glue." The word was coined by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th century when the technique became a distinctive part of modern art. Since then numerous artists have utilized the technique in diverse ways to create unique works of art. The individual elements that comprise a collage and which can range from diverse images and text to a variety of materials, all join together to determine the work’s content or purpose. The Weatherspoon has an extensive collection of collages, many of which have not been on previous display.

Sea Monsters (back by popular demand) is a dramatic and compelling story about the ancient and mysterious world of prehistoric, under-water, dinosaurs. The ancient oceans contained some of the most awe-inspiring creatures of all time. National Geographic brings these little-known creatures to life for the first time in 82 million years. For many, thread as a material calls to mind the notion of craft art or perhaps handicrafts such as embroidery or knitting. The work included in this exhibition will undoubtedly confound those expectations. Although the majority of pieces included in the exhibition feature some kind of thread element, many only evoke the material. And, rather than deriving from utilitarian purposes, all are non-functional. What these works have in common is that the artists behind them chose thread as a compositional element in order to create lines quite distinct from those possible in other media. As a result, these works surprise us with their innovation and offer us new ways of looking at art.

The Eden Preservation Society will be having a huge Tag Sale & Silent Auction on Friday and Saturday April 16th and 17th from 9 am until 5 pm at the Warehouse located at 612 Henry Street behind Pace-Stone, Eden, NC. We hope to have collectibles, books, household items, antiques, jewelry, sporting goods, furniture, bikes, tools, crafts and household items (sorry, no clothing). Silent auction items we hope to obtain include Dinner for Two, Gift Baskets, Salon Services, Travel Packages, Gift Certificates, Fine Jewelry, Handcrafts, Artwork, Event Tickets, Handmade Quilts, Professional Services, Signed Books, etc. Some of the items that have already been donated for the auction include a Weekend Getaway at a cabin on the New River in Ashe County, a Tom Barbour Photography package, and a WLOE advertising package.
