The Greensboro Children's Museum will host its 2nd Annual 5K Family Fun Run/Race called The Running of the Green on Saturday, May 22 at 8am. This event will kickoff the grand opening of the Museum's new Edible Schoolyard that morning. The official timed race will start and end at The Greensboro Children’s Museum located at 220 North Church Street and will follow a scenic route through downtown and historic Fisher Park. Celebratory Events and Family Fun Run/Walk will start at 8am

The Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its grand opening celebration for its new Edible Schoolyard on Saturday, May 22nd. The Museum has been selected to be the first museum in the country to be affiliated with Alice Waters (the renowned food activist and chef) and The Chez Panisse Foundation and will have the first Edible Schoolyard at a Museum. The Museum’s Edible Schoolyard will be comprised of hands-on, teaching gardens and kitchen classrooms where children will learn about the relationship between food, nature and life through planting, tending, growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking organic foods simply and nutritiously and will enjoy a “Seed to Table” experience. The project will include a half acre garden outside the Museum filled organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, trees and shrubs, with winding natural walkways and seating areas, include indoor and outdoor classrooms, a chicken coop, ramadas and arbors, a green house, a children’s tool shed, composting and recycling stations and a teaching kitchen, where children and families can create recipes, cook food, set tables, and share meals and conversation in a classroom setting. The Edible Schoolyard at GCM is expected to serve as a national model for other museums and children’s institutions nationwide promoting health and wellness in young children and families. To kickoff the celebration, the Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its 2nd annual Running of the Green 5K Family Fun Run & Walk that will start and end at the Museum. The Human Race is a community fundraising event that allows participants to raise money for their favorite nonprofit organization (agency, church, school PTA, etc.). On Race Day, fundraisers gather at Grimsley High School to walk, run, or roll in support of their chosen nonprofit. Pork Jam 2010 will kick off Saturday October 9th starting at 10am - 7pm. Located at 4895 Old US 29 Pelham, N.C. (about 45 mins north of Greensboro), it benefits the community of Pelham by supporting the Pelham Volunteer Fire Department. We will have art/ Crafters (over 50 in '08 and '09), Kids games/rides, face painting, hay rides, clowns, special appearances, giveaways/door prizes, live bands performing all day (Gospel, Rock, Country, Beach, Bluegrass, etc....). If that was not enough we will be serving our famous BBQ and stew all day made fresh by the volunteer firemen. This will be one event you will not want to miss! Discover the richness of local pottery at the 12th Annual Triad Area Spring Pottery Festival. More than 70 potters will exhibit their own unique styles of handmade glazed earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. This annual event will be held at the Greensboro Farmers’ Curb Market, located at 501 Yanceyville Street in Greensboro, NC. Parking and admission are free.

Join us for student recitals every hour from 12:30-4:30pm.

For the third year, MOA will cooperate with the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America to present a day of fun and learning. Scouts will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities including atlatl throwing, blowgun shooting, flint knapping, wigwam building and Native American stickball. The event also will feature Native American craft and food vendors and merit badge assistance. Commemorative patches will be for sale. Admission is $5 per scout, parents and troop leaders are free.

Work Family Resource Center is hosting it's 2nd annual Are Your Smarter than a 5th Grader Fundraiser. A fun filled family game night to benefit the organzation whose mission is to provide consumer education, referrals and resources to promot quality child care in Forsyth County.

The Children's Tumor Foundation of North Carolina will hold a 5k walk and fun run at Country Park in Greensboro. The walk is a community event, the public is invited to come and watch as teams and individuals walk to raise funds and awareness for neurofibromatosis(NF). NF is a genetic disorder that affects 1 out of every 3000 babies born each year. Complications of NF include; blindness, loss of hearing and many other severe disabilities. This genetic disorder affects the nerves and skin and has no known cure. Please come out to support this great cause and help us find a cure, one step at a time. We’ll explore art, music, creative movement, and make believe all in class! This class is geared toward 3-7 year olds.

You can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need by participating in Dining Out for Hunger in the Triad, a collaborative event benefiting Alamance County Community Services, Inc., Crisis Control Ministry in Winston Salem, Greensboro Urban Ministry, Open Door Ministries in High Point, and West End Ministries, Inc. in High Point. By dining at a participating restaurant on Tuesday, May 4th, you are helping these agencies provide desperately needed services to the less fortunate in the Triad, as they have pledged to donate 10% of their sales to their area agency on that day. Please, support your local restaurant as they support these worthwhile agencies. The proceeds from Serving Greensboro Together will be used by Greensboro Urban Ministry’s Potter’s House Community Kitchen to help feed the hungry in our area. Currently, Potter’s House feeds over 450 people every day; however, demand will be increasing as the warmer months arrive and high utility bills from the winter months come due. This spring will be particularly hard because of the recession and loss of many jobs, but the monies raised through Serving Greensboro Together will help to alleviate some of the worries and hunger for those most stricken by the recession. In honor of Spring, we’ll explore botany this time in Science Club! We’ll learn using experiments, projects, and hands-on learning. By the end of this session, your child will have a green thumb! This class is geared toward 7-12 year olds.

First Lutheran School for Young Children Spaghetti Dinner & Fundraising Concert.  Take a break from cooking and bring the kids for spaghetti and Big Bang Boom! For just $5 a ticket (children 2 and under are free) enjoy a concert by Big Bang Boom from 5:30-6:15pm, a spaghetti dinner from 5-7pm, and tour the school classrooms from 6-7pm. Greensboro’s local recreation centers will host the Easter Eggstravagazna, citywide Easter egg hunt, at the Jaycee Park football fields, 3110 Forest Lawn Drive. The hunt will begin at 10 am for three different age groups: ages 1-4, 5-7 and 8-10 years old. In addition, there will be entertainment, prizes, inflatables, music, food and lots of fun. Admission is free of charge!

The Easter Egg hunt begins at 3 p.m.
Inflatables, pony rides, a petting zoo, a train and more will be featured.
