The Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its grand opening celebration for its new Edible Schoolyard on Saturday, May 22nd. The Museum has been selected to be the first museum in the country to be affiliated with Alice Waters (the renowned food activist and chef) and The Chez Panisse Foundation and will have the first Edible Schoolyard at a Museum. The Museum’s Edible Schoolyard will be comprised of hands-on, teaching gardens and kitchen classrooms where children will learn about the relationship between food, nature and life through planting, tending, growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking organic foods simply and nutritiously and will enjoy a “Seed to Table” experience. The project will include a half acre garden outside the Museum filled organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, trees and shrubs, with winding natural walkways and seating areas, include indoor and outdoor classrooms, a chicken coop, ramadas and arbors, a green house, a children’s tool shed, composting and recycling stations and a teaching kitchen, where children and families can create recipes, cook food, set tables, and share meals and conversation in a classroom setting. The Edible Schoolyard at GCM is expected to serve as a national model for other museums and children’s institutions nationwide promoting health and wellness in young children and families. To kickoff the celebration, the Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its 2nd annual Running of the Green 5K Family Fun Run & Walk that will start and end at the Museum. Presenter: Michiel VanderSommen. From a housing perspective, the net-zero energy residence represents the ultimate in energy localization: local energy sources, local energy production (and conservation), local energy consumption. By definition, a net-zero energy residence produces at least as much energy as it consumes. The concept can be extended to provide energy support for personal transportation, by expanding the energy production capabilities of the residence (or residential community) to provide battery-charging for personal vehicles. Michiel will examine various techniques for meeting the net-zero energy objective, including passive solar design, the use of orientation, construction, and landscaping techniques for maximizing energy efficiency, and the application of energy production technologies that are appropriate for residences and residential communities.

The Piedmont Woodland Steward Series is designed to equip landowners just like you with the tools and resources you need to manage your land, presented by experts from public and private agencies.

The Piedmont Woodland Steward Series begins in April with 1.5 day workshops held every other Friday and Saturday. Locations include Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury (April 9 & 10), the NC Zoo in Asheboro (April 23 & 24), Jordan Lake Educational State Forest in Chapel Hill (May 7 & 8), and Montgomery Community College in Troy (May 21 & 22).

Discovering Your Land: Basic Land Management Skills (April 9 & 10) Salisbury, NC at Dan Nicholas Park-- How to set property management goals and objectives while considering the role of your land in the big picture of regional ecosystems. Native Landscaping & Water Management (April 23 & 24) Asheboro, NC at the NC Zoo-- A general overview of soil preparation and choosing and planting native plants in non-forested areas of your property. Care of urban trees and basic information on invasive plants. Solving stormwater problems with plants, and the basics of native grasses and wildflowers.

Woodscaping Your Woodlands & Firewise Management (May 7 & 8) Chapel Hill, NC at Jordan Lake Educational State Forest-- A general overview of managing your forest land–how topography and soil affect the forest type and a tour of harvesting methods. Basic information on forest insects and diseases, habitat areas, and secondary forest products. Plus, the benefits of prescribed burning and becoming “Firewise” in your backyard.

Stewardship, Recreation, & Liability (May 21 & 22) Troy, NC at Montgomery Community College and nearby sites-- Planning trails on your property, plus the basics of land ownership liability, recreational income opportunities, and conservation easements. Explore management practices in the field and apply your new knowledge and skills. Finalize your goals and objectives. Graduation ceremony and lunch will follow on Saturday for those who have attended at least 3 of the 4 workshops.

The Greensboro Jaycees have partnered with Guilford County government to provide manpower for a Beautification & Recycling project in McCleansville. We need 20 volunteers. For more information contact either DJ (treasurer@jaycee.org) or Alexis (secretary@jaycee.org).
What: (there should be something everyone can do) * * Clean up debris * * Sort salvageable items * * Recycle scrap metal (metal and trash dumpsters provided by DH Griffin) * * Demolition of small out buildings * * Fence and vine removal * * Other jobs as necessary – take before/after pictures, etc. What to bring: Participants are asked to bring a brown bag lunch if they would like to eat lunch on the property. The Open Space Committee will provide some drinks and snacks. Also, the folks at Hines Chapel Church which is on the site, will be selling food (including BBQ) and drinks. We will need equipment such as wheelbarrows, sledge hammers, crow bars, hammers, rakes, shovels, wire cutters, etc.). You will want to bring gloves, boots, a hat, and long sleeves for this work.
