The Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its grand opening celebration for its new Edible Schoolyard on Saturday, May 22nd. The Museum has been selected to be the first museum in the country to be affiliated with Alice Waters (the renowned food activist and chef) and The Chez Panisse Foundation and will have the first Edible Schoolyard at a Museum. The Museum’s Edible Schoolyard will be comprised of hands-on, teaching gardens and kitchen classrooms where children will learn about the relationship between food, nature and life through planting, tending, growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking organic foods simply and nutritiously and will enjoy a “Seed to Table” experience. The project will include a half acre garden outside the Museum filled organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, trees and shrubs, with winding natural walkways and seating areas, include indoor and outdoor classrooms, a chicken coop, ramadas and arbors, a green house, a children’s tool shed, composting and recycling stations and a teaching kitchen, where children and families can create recipes, cook food, set tables, and share meals and conversation in a classroom setting. The Edible Schoolyard at GCM is expected to serve as a national model for other museums and children’s institutions nationwide promoting health and wellness in young children and families. To kickoff the celebration, the Greensboro Children’s Museum will hold its 2nd annual Running of the Green 5K Family Fun Run & Walk that will start and end at the Museum. Online Registration for this event will be available soon and more details on the Edible Schoolyard Grand Opening! Visit http://www.gcmuseum.com for more information about the Greensboro Children’s Museum and the Edible Schoolyard project and the 5K Family Fun Run/Walk.

Dr. Ghasem Shahbazi, director of bioengineering at N.C. A&T, will provide an introduction to the varieties of biofuels, followed by an assessment, based on research done at N.C. A&T and elsewhere, of the prospects for biofuels production in the Piedmont. His presentation will finish with an update regarding the activities of the Biofuels Center of North Carolina. The featured biofuels business will be Red Birch Energy, which operates an industrial-scale biodiesel refinery in Bassett, Va. Among other things, Red Birch – twice invited to Washington to present its business model – will outline its future franchise option, which should be of interest to those looking into biofuels business opportunities. Finally, Burlington Biodiesel, which has operated a biodiesel production co-op for many years, will describe its current operations and make the case for the continuing existence of biodiesel co-ops in general.

Presenter: Michiel VanderSommen. From a housing perspective, the net-zero energy residence represents the ultimate in energy localization: local energy sources, local energy production (and conservation), local energy consumption. By definition, a net-zero energy residence produces at least as much energy as it consumes. The concept can be extended to provide energy support for personal transportation, by expanding the energy production capabilities of the residence (or residential community) to provide battery-charging for personal vehicles. Michiel will examine various techniques for meeting the net-zero energy objective, including passive solar design, the use of orientation, construction, and landscaping techniques for maximizing energy efficiency, and the application of energy production technologies that are appropriate for residences and residential communities.

In recent years, the study of energy use and policy has become increasingly important. As a key driver in our modern economy, energy is essential to everyday life. Our societies require energy in order to remain vibrant and productive, and we as individuals need it in order to support our ways of life. At the same time, as responsible global citizens and leaders we worry about our dependence on nonrenewable fossil fuels and the sustainability of our local and global ecologies. As national and international debates about energy policy and the economy emerge, it is essential that key players engage one another with the goal of furthering public education and finding sustainable energy solutions.

The Wake Forest University Energizing the Future conference is designed to create such dialogue. On February 10th and 11th, 2010, innovative business leaders, leading researchers, and policy makers will meet on the University’s campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to discuss energy use and policy in their current and future forms. The event will include a public lecture by New York Times columnist and author Thomas Friedman. Other headline guests include James Rogers, CEO of Duke Energy, and Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Energy. Together with a host of academic thinkers, innovative entrepreneurs, and a video appearance by Dr. Steven Chu, U.S. Energy Secretary, these guests will guide and frame our discussion.

"FUEL" is a comprehensive and entertaining look at energy in America: a history of where we have been, our present predicament and a solution to our dependence on foreign oil. Rousing and reactionary, "FUEL" is an amazing, in-depth, personal journey of oil use and abuse as it examines wide-ranging energy solutions other than oil, the faltering US auto and petroleum industries, and the latest stirrings of the American mindset toward alternative energy. Josh Tickell’s stirring, radical and multi-award winning "FUEL" may be known by some as the “little energy documentary,” but in truth, it’s a powerful portrait of America’s overwhelming addiction to, and reliance on, oil. Having been born and raised in one of the USA’s most oil producing regions, he saw first hand how the industry controls, deceives and damages the country, its people and the environment, and after one too many people he knew became sick, Tickell knew he just couldn’t idly stand by any longer. He decided to make a film, focusing both on the knowledge and insight he discovered, but also giving hope that solutions are at reach. A ‘regular guy’ who felt he could make a difference, he spent 11 years making his movie, showing himself – and others – that an individual can indeed make a difference. Post-screening discussion led by Piedmont Biofuels, http://www.biofuels.coop/
