Dr. Elliot Engel will bring to life the noted author and Greensboro native O.Henry, whose 400 short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, characterization, and the clever use of twist endings. O.Henry is the pen name of William Sydney Porter, who was born in Greensboro Sept.11, 1862. Among his most beloved stories are “The Gift of the Magi” and “Ransom of Red Chief.” Porter moved away from Greensboro at the age of 20 and died in 1910. He is buried in Asheville. An Indianapolis, Ind., native, Elliot Engel lives in Raleigh and has taught at N.C. State University, UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. He has published seven books, and his articles have appeared in national magazines, including Newsweek.
