The Mastery of William Tolliver William Tolliver (1951 – 2000) Tolliver Arts Greensboro, NC – (October 8, 2007) – presents The Mastery of William Tolliver” which will feature the solo exhibit of works by the late William Tolliver (1951 – 2000). The sharing of a legacy of African-American Art will run from October 28 – December 14, 2007 at the African American Atelier, Inc. in the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie Street, Greensboro, North Carolina. The show examines the relationship between the creation and its onlooker through texture, dimension, color and visual contact with the work. William Tolliver spent 38 of his 48 years perfecting his skills incorporating abstract, realism and cubism as stylistic interests. At age seven; his mother would conduct art contest between herself, Tolliver and his older brother to see who could draw the best. Although self taught he was a master in multiple mediums handling figure studies, portraits, human interest situations, landscapes and semiabstract, all with equal perfection and all from a photographic memory. Tolliver’s long list of achievements includes having his work travel the U.S with the Smithsonian Museum and completing a commission for the 1996 Olympic Games. The mission of the African American Atelier is to promote an awareness, appreciation and sensitivity to the visual arts and culture of African Americans while working in harmony with other ethnic groups. “A very important component of Atelier’s mission is education”. As a not-for-profit, we take particular pleasure in featuring work by masters in the art industry such as William Tolliver, to aid the education of emerging artists and art students. Focusing on under-represented audiences within our visual arts and Guilford County community is a labor of love for the Atelier. For many, by virtue of our location, the Cultural Arts Center serves as their formal introduction to contemporary art and professional artists. Gallery hours are Tuesday- Saturday 10:00 AM – 5PM, Wednesday 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM, and Sunday 2:00pm -5:00pm.
