Art and Protest: Bodies in Motion
July 30-August 2, 2007
Add Review/CommentArt and Protest: Bodies in Motion is the title and focus of the 21st annual Black Theatre Network conference, on the campus of North Carolina A & T State University July 30-August 2. Dynamic theatre artists, teachers, hip hop performers, scholars, and arts lovers will celebrate the historic legacy and culture of Greensboro through workshops, panels and performances. The conference features the Marvin Sims Teacher Institute in which high school and middle school teachers will learn how theatre can enhance teaching across the curriculum. Among the many engaging panel offerings is: The Greensboro Four: An Historical Perspective of the Civil Rights Movement in North Carolina. Presenters include a survivor of the Greensboro Four, several professors from North Carolina A & T, and the CEO of Greensboro Scenic Tours. Another panel, Acts of Protest in Hip Hop Theatre, will examine the next generation of artist/activists. “Black theatre originated in the South and the Civil Rights Movement got powerful momentum from Greensboro,” says Dr. Sandra Shannon, President of the Black Theatre Network. “The BTN conference pays tribute to our ancestors as we train teachers, encourage young scholars and support theatre artists. Our events compliment and illuminate the National Black Theatre Festival, and transportation will be provided to enable participants to visit both the conference and the festival.” Full conference and day rates available. For registration and a conference schedule, visit the Black Theatre Network website: www.blacktheatrenetwork.org .
