Guilford College’s Department of Theater Studies will present Edward Albee’s “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?”

Are there limits to tolerance in our society? In “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?,” Tony Award-winning playwright Edward Albee skillfully crafts a story that forces the audience to question why our society accepts some behaviors and not others. Part comedy, part tragedy and always provocative, Albee’s tragicomedy follows Martin, a successful architect, as his seemingly ideal life, shared with his wife Stevie and their gay teenage son Billy falls apart around him. Events are set in motion after the big-hearted Martin mistakenly confides in Ross, his best friend since prep school. Betrayal, infidelity, sexuality and social taboos are just some of the ubiquitous themes dramatized on stage. The New York Times said, “Mr. Albee still asks questions that no other major American dramatist dares to ask.”
