African American Atelier to Host Food Drive to Support Kids Café Food Drive Dates: October 25 – November 1, 2009 Beginning on October 25, 2009 the African American Atelier will collect non-perishable food items to support Guilford County children who live in food insecure households. Throughout Northwestern North Carolina 81,500 children live in food insecure households. Each day 35,611 children across the globe die as a result of starvation or being mal-nourished. 11 million children will die each year as a result of this horrific epidemic. Child hunger not only affects hungry families, it affects the entire community. Non-perishable food items can be brought to the African American Atelier, which is located in the Greensboro Cultural Center at 200 North Davie Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Sunday from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Donations received from the African American Atelier’s Food Drive will go directly to the Salvation Army’s Boys and Girls Club Kids Café. Kids Cafe programs provide free meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of community locations where children already congregate—such as Boys & Girls Clubs, churches or public schools. In addition to providing meals to kids, all Kids Cafe programs also offer a safe place, where under the supervision of trustworthy staff, a child can get involved in educational, recreational and social activities. The African American Atelier, Inc., is a non-profit art organization, that seeks to promote an awareness, appreciation and sensitivity to the visual arts and culture of African Americans and to work in harmony with other ethnic groups. In addition to gallery exhibitions, the Atelier offers an array of cultural and educational programs for children including, Adopt-a-School: Art After-School, Saturday Enrichment Workshops and Murals, Minds & Communities.
