DRBA Annual Meeting
March 17, 2007
Add Review/CommentDalton McMichael High School, at the intersection of US 220 and NC 135 in Mayodan, North Carolina, will be the site of the Dan River Basin Association’s Sixth Annual Membership Meeting Saturday, March 17, at 10:00 a.m., featuring talks by the heads of two parks—Fairy Stone State Park in Virginia and the new Mayo River State Park in North Carolina. Along with talks by John Grooms, Manager of Fairy Stone State Park, and Adrienne Wallace, the first superintendent of Mayo River State Park, the meeting will elect officers and honor members for their outstanding service during 2006. John Grooms, for the past 6 years Park Manager of Fairy Stone State Park in Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia, has worked in Virginia state parks for more than 36 years, serving in six Virginia parks. The largest in Virginia’s first group of state parks, Fairy Stone State Park was opened in 1936. Six years a ranger at Eno River State Park, in Orange and Durham Counties, North Carolina, Adrienne Wallace was named as the first Superintendent of the new Mayo River State Park in the summer of 2006. Water issues are a principal interest of both Grooms and Wallace, as for the Dan River Basin Association itself. The business session of DRBA’s annual meeting, with President Will Truslow presiding, will include reports of activities and achievements during 2006, recognition of outstanding volunteer service, and election of officers and board members. Dalton McMichael High School, at 6945 NC 135, on the northwest corner of US 220 By-Pass and NC Highway 135, is just over 4 miles from the main office of the Dan River Basin Association at 103 South Second Avenue in Mayodan.. Following a light lunch, Superintendent Wallace will lead an optional tour of the Old Mayo Park in Mayodan. This park, one of many “pearls” on the “string” that is the Mayo River, was designed in the late 1940s by an architect of international renown and will be renovated to serve as the headquarters of the new Mayo River State Park. The February “First Saturday Outing” of the Association was a hike on another of the “pearls” of the new state park, a visit to Fall Creek Falls, historic Byrd’s Ledge and the site of an old mill race on the Mayo at Anglin Mill Bridge attended by sixty hikers, remarkable attendance for a cold, clear winter day. The annual meeting, like all other meetings and outings of the Dan River Basin Association, is open to the public without charge.
