Add Review/CommentThanks to the generous gift of his descendents, the University Libraries of UNCG have acquired the extensive collection of Roy Z. Kemp’s writings. A prolific author of over 3,000 published poems and numerous books and articles, Roy Z. Kemp (1910-1980) was a Greensboro native who returned to Greensboro upon his retirement. The collection of his writings includes many published and unpublished poems, book reviews, and feature articles for North Carolina and Maryland newspapers. Many of Kemp's poems are still widely quoted, and he is perhaps most famous for his affirmation that "There is no better or more blessed bondage than to be a prisoner of hope." The 18 linear feet of his papers also includes numerous letters that record his publication history and correspondence with leading spiritual magazines. Kemp’s family saved his personal correspondence as well, and these letters document his observations of World War II, where he served in the air force and his long career at the Social Security Administration. A selection of the Roy Z. Kemp papers will be on display in the Martha Blakeney Hodges Reading Room of Jackson Library, UNCG from June 8th through September 10th. Once the collection is cataloged and preserved, it will be available in its entirety for public use.
