This May downtown Greensboro may (temporarily) look a little different thanks to a special collaboration between the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Downtown Greensboro Inc., and the ArtBeat Greensboro Festival. During the Festival the first week in May, artist Michael Townsend will create a series of public tape art drawings on the facades of downtown retail shops, restaurants, and other highly trafficked areas that will bring the community together in a unique way. The project is entitled Tape Art: Drawn Together. Some may remember Townsend's tape drawings on the exterior of the Weatherspoon Art Museum in 2003. The public is welcome to watch the installation unfold in various locations, including a surprise site, throughout the week. "Not knowing where the next drawing will appear is part of the fun," says project leader, Ann Grimaldi, Weatherspoon Art Museum. "Michael and his assistants are terrific at hiding clues within their drawings that reward viewers who put in the time to find them." Viewers who wish to track the progress of the tape drawings from home can view live streaming images of Townsend and his assistants at work. Look for Tape Art Live at http://weatherspoon.uncg.edu. This type of audience interaction is a first for Townsend who will be streaming live images from his cellphone.
