Want to combine your love of movies with a love of learning? Grab a bag of popcorn and try UNCG’s new six-week seminar on women in film. Each week you’ll get to screen a full-length movie and participate in a spirited discussion led by University faculty members from the Departments of Communications Studies, English and Philosophy. Sponsored by the UNCG Community Advancement through Lifelong Learning (CALL) program, the lineup ranges from early century classics to modern-day award winners: Now, Voyager. February 16. Bette Davis stars as an oppressed ugly duckling who turns into an elegant swan. Discussion moderator: Dr. Hephzibah Roskelly. My Brilliant Career. February 23. This critically acclaimed Australian film features a defiant heroine who refuses to conform to society’s expectations of how a ‘proper’ woman should live. Discussion moderator: Dr. Frances Arndt. Fat Girl. March 2. French Filmmaker Catherine Breillat explores adolescent psychosexual behavior from a female perspective. Discussion moderator: Dr. Janine Jones. Mean Girls. March 16. Scripted by Tina Fey of Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock fame, this film stars Lindsay Lohan in a satirical look at high school alpha girls. Discussion moderator: Dr. Hephzibah Roskelly. Water. March 23. The controversial Indian director Deepa Methta delves into the plight of widows in 1930s India and their struggle to overcome institutionalized oppression. Discussion moderator: Dr. Jody Natalle. Little Miss Sunshine. March 30. This quirky, Academy Award-winning film follows a dysfunctional family on a road trip to a beauty pageant. Discussion moderator: Dr. Elizabeth Chiseri-Strater. Screenings are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Mondays at the Carousel Grande Cinema on Battleground Avenue.
